Shuswap On The Nipissing

Walleye Hatchery

Did you know that we at Shuswap also operate a walleye hatchery. We have currently been performing this important function for the past now 21 years. In these same years we have also placed 10 large tandem truck loads of clean stone in various location in the west bay and west arm areas of lake Nipissing for the purpose of creating natural spawning beds and walleye habitat. We understand the importance of good conservation of our land and waters. \

Every year we raise 2 million walleye from egg to fry (or hatchling) to continue, we then raise 350,000 of these same fry to spring fingerlings, meaning in 6 weeks they grow from 1/8” in size to between 3” -4” in our large rearing pond. We have now expanded this program to raise some of these walleye to fall fingerlings meaning by October of that same year they will grow to a healthy and hardy walleye of 7” -8”.

We consider this to be a very productive success story performed by us exclusively in restocking this area with only a small hand full of volunteer people who have dedicated their time and effort to this very rewarding long term venture. We do all these great things with no support or financial aid from any of our government agencies. I give my personal thanks to a wonderful group of individuals for their undaunted help.

We always seek your contributions through physical support or donation and for that, we thank everyone of you for your consideration and generosity!
